ABOUT UWRT
UWRT 1103 is a three-hour credit course that teaches its students to analyze source material to create works that are understandable to certain audiences and to express thoughts in writing. Strategies are taught to help with researching and conceptualizing ideas.
During this semester, my goal for the course is to become more consistent with my writing, both throughout one paper and from paper to paper. My hope is to become better at analyzing and gathering my thoughts when I go to put them down on paper.
ABOUT MY TOPIC
I have always loved watching the Olympics and hearing the stories of Olympians of past games who made history and watching modern athletes break records or push their sport into new territory. The games are a great time to watch sports of all kinds and watch the emotions running through athletes that have trained heir entire lives for that moment on the podium. Everyone knows that these athletes train for hours and hours each day, but not many people realize what is done to fuel that training . So, for my topic, I chose to look into the diets of Olympic athletes and the differences between those diets that are unique to the sport. The reason why I wanted to look into this was because Michael Phelps once claimed that he ate 12,000 calories in a single day while training, which made me wonder what the diets of other athletes would look like.
HELPFUL TERMS
Baron Pierre de Coubertin
The founder of the modern Olympic Games. On a trip to Greece, Coubertin came across the Hippodrome ruins in Olympia, Greece and was inspired to revive the games. After much careful planning, the very first games were held in April of 1896 with 14 participating countries, 241 athletes, 10 sports, and 43 events. (Note: medals are awarded at events and the United States won the most gold medals at these games, foreshadowing the future, but Greece won the most medals overall.)
Borrowed from a Dominican priest close to Paris, Coubertin used the three Latin words as the motto for the games as a way to encourage athletes to strive for excellence and perform their very best. It is a lesson that can be applied to every person as well as the athletes.
The Olympic flag is one of the most recognized symbols in the world. Designed by Pierre de Coubertin, the flag debuted at the 1920 games in Antwerp, Belgium. The five interlaced rings represent the five continents, encouraging unity, and the 6 colors-red, blue, green, yellow, black, and white- represent all nations.
An important part of the, the flame is lit in Olympia, Greece and carried by relay across the world through different continents, regions, countries, and cities by torches that are designed for each games. It cannot go out during the relay and it is only extinguished at the closing ceremony. The lighting of the flame at the opening ceremony is a highlight of the games however, the torch was carried by relay beginning with the 1936 Berlin games.
GOAT
Greatest Of All Time. A term used to describe people, usually athletes, who have great careers, set a lot of records, or easily beat the competition. Examples include Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, Jerry Rice, Muhammad Ali, Usain Bolt, Serena Williams (note: she won the Australian Open while 8 weeks pregnant) , etc.
UWRT
UWRT stands for University Writing and it is a first year writing course that introduces students to research papers. It is an online- based, three credit hour course . The course has three major assignments: Assignment 1, Assignment 2, and the E-Portfolio. There are four different placements for UWRT: 1101, 1102, 1103, and 1104. Placement is determined on one's SAT scores.
Assignment 1
First part of the research assignment completed in UWRT 1103. Consisted mainly of collecting, organizing, and summarizing data. Introduces the topic and creates building blocks for assignment 2.This part of the assignment is extremely important because makes it much easier to find information and lay out what what the paper will look like.
Assignment 2
The second part of the course that involves revising assignment 1 and adding to the research already completed. This assignment has much more writing than assignment 1 which made it much longer but also more cohesive. This assignment looks more like an actual paper.
E-Portfolio
An online collection of someone's work or display of their resumes for future employers. It contains most of the work completed on assignments 1 and 2 to show what ha been done.
Dietitian
Health professional that works with people of all types to create the best diet to fit their needs. Dietitians are sometimes referred to as Nutritionists but the two are completely different. Dietitians have more laws to adhere to and regulations. However, they must graduate from a four year accredited program and pass an exam in order to begin practicing which means that there is more education and knowledge behind them. Nutritionists can get "certified" anywhere, even online, and just about anyone can do it. The government also has less control and regulations implemented.
